APPLYING FOR A LONG-TERM STAY VISA (RESIDENCE PERMIT – EXCEEDING 90 DAYS)

Foreign nationals requesting entry to Hungary with a purpose of a long-term stay (exceeding 90 days) may submit a residence permit application. In case of a successful application, the applicant will get a visa authorizing him/her to a single entry to Hungary, with a valid stay for up to 30 days maximum, in order to receive a residence permit. The decision on the residence permit falls within the competence of the regional directorates of the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing.

The consular services are by prior appointment only. Applications can only be presented in person and might be followed by a consular interview.

What can you do if your residency permit application gets refused?

You may appeal against this decision. The decision to refuse a residence permit application and the reasons of the refusal are detailed in the decision that is handed out by our Office (in Hungarian). 

The visa fee is not refunded if the visa is refused. The visa fee covers the cost of the examination of the visa application.

If a visa application is rejected, the applicant or his legally authorized representative has the right to appeal in writing within a period of 8 days after the date on which the applicant is notified of the refusal of the visa. The appeal containing the reasons for appealing must be handed in in person at our Office. For the fee of appeal procedure, please check the Visa Fees site for updated prices.

The decision will be made by the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary generally within 15 days.

In case of refusal of the appeal, the applicant may appeal this decision within 3 days by filing a legal action at our Office with the Administrative and Labour Court in Budapest. There is no further legal remedy against the decision of the Administrative and Labour Court in Budapest.
